Yanapaccha Mountain Climb
Located in the heart of the Cordillera Blanca, strategically surrounded by towering five- and six-thousand-meter peaks, Yanapaccha offers a spectacular panoramic view from its summit. After Pisco, “Yana” is perhaps the most frequently climbed mountain in this area.
The name Yanapaccha comes from Quechua toponymy: yana means “black,” and paccha or paqcha means “waterfall,” “cascade,” or “falling water.”
Situated almost directly opposite Pisco Mountain, access to Yanapaccha begins at Kilometer 42 of the road leading to Portachuelo Pass, making it one of the most accessible and rewarding alpine climbs in the Cordillera Blanca
Day 1: Huaraz - Km 42 - Trek to Moraine Camp (5,000 m)
Transportation: Approximately 3.5 hours
Trekking: Approximately 4 hours
Departing from Huaraz by private vehicle, we drive to Cebollapampa, a journey of approximately 3 hours. Along the way, we enjoy spectacular views of the beautiful Llanganuco Valley and its two famous lakes, Chinancocha and Orconcocha.
Continuing to Km 42, the starting point of our adventure, we begin a scenic trek across high Andean terrain toward Moraine Camp. Upon arrival, we set up camp and spend the afternoon relaxing while enjoying a breathtaking mountain sunset. Dinner is served at camp, followed by an overnight stay surrounded by the stunning landscapes of the Cordillera Blanca.
- Car transport: 3 hours
- Hiking: 3-4 hours
Day 2: Moraine Camp - Yanapaccha Summit (5,460 m) - Moraine Camp (5,000 m) - Return to Huaraz.
Mountain Activity: Approximately 6 to 8 hours
Transportation: Approximately 3.5 hours
Summit day! We wake up at approximately 2:30 a.m. for a light breakfast and begin our ascent around 3:00 a.m.. The climb starts with a traverse across the moraine until reaching the glacier, where we gear up with all the necessary technical equipment.
From there, we climb approximately 180 meters of steep ice and snow slopes (50°-60° inclination) to reach the summit of Yanapaccha (5,460 m). At the top, we are rewarded with breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks, including Huascarán, Chopicalqui, Pisco, Huandoy, and Chacraraju.
After enjoying the summit, we descend along a scenic ridge with spectacular views of Chacraraju, eventually returning to the moraine. Here, we remove our technical gear, pack our equipment, and hike back to Km 42, where our private transportation awaits to take us back to Huaraz.
