Laguna Llanganuco

Full-Day Laguna Llanganuco Tour

This tour includes visits to the towns along the Callejón de Huaylas, the Campo Santo of Yungay (a town tragically destroyed by the 1970 earthquake and landslide), and the stunning Chinancocha Lagoon located in the Llanganuco Valley between the Huandoy and Huascarán mountains.

This excursion is often used for acclimatization, as the vehicle drops you off at the same elevation as the lagoon, requiring minimal walking. The route through the Callejón de Huaylas is a classic and one of the most important circuits in Huaraz and Huascarán National Park.

During the tour, we’ll visit the town of Carhuaz, the Yungay memorial site (Campo Santo), and the artisan village of Taricá.

🕣 8:50 AM – Hotel Pickup – Callejón de Huaylas – Yungay – Chinancocha Lagoon

On this day, we’ll enter Huascarán National Park and see the highest mountain in Peru—Huascarán, standing at 6,768 meters (22,205 ft). We’ll also visit the historic town of Yungay, buried by the 1970 earthquake and landslide, now recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Our journey begins heading north from Huaraz, arriving in the town of Carhuaz to enjoy traditional homemade ice cream and take photos in the main square. We then continue to Yungay to explore the buried city and its memorial site, Campo Santo. From there, we ascend to Chinancocha Lagoon in Llanganuco, where you’ll enjoy a peaceful boat ride.

Afterward, we descend to the town of Caraz for a visit and the opportunity to purchase locally made delicacies. On the return to Huaraz, we’ll stop in the artisan village of Taricá.

Recommendations

  • This tour is ideal for travelers seeking nature and cultural experiences in the Cordillera Blanca.
  • We recommend taking an overnight bus from Lima, Trujillo, or Chimbote to arrive in Huaraz the following morning.
  • Clothing should match the season and planned activities. During the sunny Andean summer (mid-April to October), days can be intensely sunny with temperatures reaching up to 68°F (20°C), while nights can drop sharply to around 41°F (5°C). It’s best to bring lightweight or long-sleeved clothing for the day and warm layers for the evening.
  • During the rainy season (November to April), waterproof clothing and shoes that can withstand water and cold are highly recommended.
  • If you plan to do other activities around Huaraz—such as camping, hiking, ice climbing, or biking—be sure to wear appropriate clothing and gear.
  • The program shown here is a one-day tour, but if you’d like to extend your stay, please ask about our Huaraz packages that include hotel and tours ranging from 2 to 5 days

Important

  • Enter Huascarán National Park only with the required authorization (entrance ticket).
  • Respect and follow the instructions of park rangers and authorized guides.
  • Stay safe—use only marked and authorized trails.
  • Do not collect wild plants or animals.
  • Camp only in designated shelters and authorized camping areas.
  • Avoid littering. Dispose of waste only in designated areas or take it with you outside the park.
  • Do not go beyond marked trail boundaries; respect and do not damage signage.
  • Respect local customs—ask for permission before taking photos of local residents.
  • Do not bring domestic or exotic animals, as they may harm the park’s native wildlife.
  • Get informed before traveling to Huascarán National Park—know what you can do and where you can go.
  • Let us handle the logistics so you can simply enjoy the experience.
  • For your safety and that of your group, we strongly recommend visiting National Parks and Protected Areas with a professional guide.
